Sustainable Step New
England (SSNE) and the Lowell Center for Sustainable
Production invite you to attend a
networking meeting to learn about and
discuss The Precautionary Principle
and Sustainability featuring Joel Tickner of
the Lowell Center for Sustainable
Production and Beth Tener of SSNE.
Wednesday, January 30th, 12 - 2 pm
1 Beacon St., 26th floor
(registration required - see below), Boston, MA
The precautionary principle is
sparking debate among policy makers, business
people, and professionals worldwide
as a basis for environmental and health
decision-making. The Precautionary
Principle defined simply is the idea that
when an activity raises threats of
harm to human health or the environment,
precautionary measures should be
taken even if some cause and effect
relationships are not fully
established scientifically. Full details at:
http://www.uml.edu/centers/lcsp/precaution/.
A core focus of
sustainability is a shift to from
current practice towards a precautionary
preventive approach to manage the
environmental problems of today and
prevent those of tomorrow.
Join us for an interactive dialogue
addressing:
- What is the precautionary principle?
- How does this compare to and
differ from current approaches?
- How does this align with
sustainability and The Natural Step?
- What are examples of the
precautionary principle in action and how is it
being advanced locally?
Brief remarks by the presenters will
be followed by small group discussions
to explore some provocative
questions such as barriers to this approach, how
to engage people in conversation
about taking a precautionary approach, etc.
Presenters: Joel Tickner is a
Research Assistant Professor at the Lowell
Center for Sustainable Production at
UMass Lowell and has researched and
