Boston SSNE Networking Meeting
Make an Environmental Impact through Your Organization’s Purchasing
Practices
April 4th, 5:30 – 7:30 pm
Greater Boston location – MIT Room 7338, 77 Mass Ave, Building 7
Co-Sponsored by New Ecology and the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning
Environmental purchasing of goods and services plays a critical role in
building a sustainable company or organization of any size, but changing
purchasing practices, especially in a large institutional setting, can be a
challenge. Join Sustainable Step New England (SSNE) at our Greater Boston
Networking Meeting on April 4th from 5:30 – 7:30 pm for a
presentation and discussion about how purchasing strategies can move organizations
toward sustainability.
Our case study will describe how Massachusetts state and local
government expenditures on environmentally preferable products expanded from
approximately $3 million in 1992 to over $68 million today. Eric Friedman, Director of State
Sustainability in Massachusetts who helped to initiate and implement this
trailblazing program, will speak about how purchasing strategies can
effectively move small and large organizations toward sustainability, as well
as his experiences trying to affect change within a large bureaucracy.
Meeting participants will discuss the barriers that Eric faced in
attempting to change the purchasing culture in Massachusetts and brainstorm
about how they can address similar challenges in their own organizations. Examples of successful strategies and
specific purchasing tools will also be presented and discussed.
This session will begin with a ten-minute overview of The Natural Step
framework for sustainability for those who would like an introduction.
Fee: $15. Registration is required. Register on line at: http://www.ssne.org/EventRegister.htm or call Lysa
Leland at 978-768-7006 or email lleland@tiac.net.
